Join “The Works” Our Teen group at brooklyn Apple that studies our city.
What: “The Works” Is a project based self directed class that seeks to answer one big question about our city: “How the Heck Does this Thing Work?!”
Over the course of the year we tackle three parts of our city's infrastructure. Each unit will be chosen by the group and individual projects will be chosen one month into each unit of study.
We visit sites, experts, exhibitions, elected officials, community advocates, and city planners each and every Friday.
After our visits we usually have 30-45 minutes left for field games, soccer/basketball, and running around together!
Projects can be in any format- academic papers, journalism, graphic novels, rock operas or physically built science projects or models, etc.

“Take Care Now” Social Infrastructure: Healthcare, Education, Religion, Housing, Social Clubs, and Sports.
“Art is Bread” The infrastructure of Culture
“Zip/Zap/Zop” Energy Infrastructure
PAST UNITS: 2023-2025
“All you Can Eat” Infrastructure of Food: Markets (Large and small) Street Vendors, Food Insecurity and Food Security, Urban Farms, and much more.
“Garbage City” Sanitation: Compost, Trash, Rats, Water, Sewage, Recycling
“Can we Talk?” Communications, Media, Internet, Public wifi, Journalism, Propaganda, Pigeons, and P.R.
“Safe Home” How did we end up in this housing crisis? Meetings with Architects, Policy Makers, Elected Officials, Housing and Preservation Department, Housing Trusts, Coop City Site Visit etc.

The infrastructure of Third Spaces
Who: Group of 10-12 students. Ages: 12-18
When: September 12 2025 - June 12th 2026
On Fridays we will visit sites, experts, elected officials, community advocates, and city planners. 10 A.M. - 2 P.M. (we often run longer due to the distance/length of site visits, so you might not want to schedule a class or activity directly after.)
Where:
Fridays: Meet at Brooklyn Public Library Pacific Branch, leave for trips from there.
Staff:
Lead Teacher: Noah Mayers. Noah is the founder of Brooklyn Apple Academy and has led more than 600 field trips around NYC and the Tri-State area. He’s obsessed with NYC, systems, infrastructure, politics, and art.
