Frequently Asked Questions…

Is BAA a school?

No.  Brooklyn Apple Academy is a home school resource and community center.  Our students are homeschool students who attend BAA for as little or as much time as they like, as a part of their homeschool program.

What does self-direction mean?

For our purposes, self-direction means each individual has the right to decide what, how, where, and with whom they learn. We trust our students to make decisions that make sense for them and to pursue those things that are of most interest to them. We do not use coercion, punishment, rewards, or force to encourage students to participate in offerings. Children in our space are free to show up as they are take or leave whatever suits them.

What are the class sizes?

Brooklyn Apple Academy (BAA) does not have standard grade levels or classes. However, we aim to keep all of our offerings to 6-12 students. Throughout the day we keep a 4:1 student/teacher ratio.

When is Brooklyn Apple in session?

We operate on a schedule similar to NYC public schools. The 2021/2022 school year will begin September 13th. Offerings meet roughly Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM until 2:45 PM.

How much is tuition?

Tuition is annual and based on a number of factors, including the number of days per week, the number of siblings, and the length of the offering selected (some are partial day and some are full day). For more questions, reach out to Janna Hawkins, the nerd-in-residence, at janna.hawkins.baa@gmail.com

What are the ages of the students?

We have students ages 4.5-17 in our regular offerings. Please contact us directly for information about our “Crab Apples” program for younger students.
